In late October 2003, the Southern California mountains were besieged by at  least a dozen vicious wildfires.  With more than half a year of no rainfall coupled with raging Santa Ana winds from the northeast, the entire area was  a tinderbox.  Smoke and ash shrouded San Diego for several days and created not only unhealthy breathing conditions, but eerie scenes like this.
