Late each afternoon―just before sunset―the Earth's atmosphere provides the setting sun with an orange color and a squashed, distorted shape.  This photo, taken from the shoreline at Imperial Beach, California, shows our star practically touching the ocean horizon.  Those in the ship below surely had an equally impressive view.
