After a night of active substorms, the aurora enters what's called its "recovery" phase.  It now fills the sky with a diffuse, ethereal glow, along with a rare "black" aurora―which isn't an aurora at all but simply an absence of auroral light.  Shot with a 16mm fisheye lens, this photo encompasses nearly the entire sky.  Note the Big Dipper in the upper center, and the bright star Arcturus to its lower left.  The distant lights of Fairbanks, Alaska create a yellowish glow on the lower right.
