RING AROUND THE MOON
LHL-06-001

On the morning of February 14, 2006,  cirrus clouds swept over Southern California's Anza-Borrego Desert.  When light from the waning gibbous moon passed through the ice crystals making up the clouds, a complete halo formed around the moon.  Because the phenomenon is so large—44 degrees in diameter—and the tree is so tall, five separate wide-angle  images stitched together were needed to capture the scene.
